Do you know ? Why a mobile phone is called Cell phone

Have you ever imagined that why a mobile phone is alternatively called a cell phone and why not any thing else ? why not a banana phone ? why not apple phone ...Excuse me apple phone as a brand i am not talking here. What I am trying to tell you as the generic term used for mobile phone as cell phone. I do understand that many of you would be aware of topic of discussion, but for those who don't know why ? I will tell you keep reading..

We all know that we receive signals and have communication from mobile towers that are installed all across the country and globe by various telecom service providers of respective countries. There had been a long going of what mobile phones that we use today. The evolution of wireless communication dates back almost one century. But in today's topic we are going to concentrate just on why an mobile phone is called cell phone and history part is a topic for some another day.

As early days mobile phones were just analog and were limited to just an handful of channels that can carry out communication over the air. Neither way they where portable and smart as today's mobile devices. Now to make mobile call there is a lot going on in the background to establish a call. First of all you will need a mobile tower and an handset or instrument that connects to that mobile tower. Now you are communicating over the air for mobile call so air is the medium and electromagnetic waves

carry your mobile voice signal. This signal is either coded and modified according to the need of communication establishing a kind of invisible path between your mobile phone and the terminating telephone number through mobile tower is called channel. Now in early days as I mentioned the coverage was limited and channels to were limited. These channels were operational on some frequency as we now know that GSM-800 operates at about 900 Mhz frequency which is an international standard so on and so forth for GSM-1800 etc. So as now I have briefed you about channel working over frequency you have the basic idea how mobile communication takes place. So in early days there use to be only one mobile tower in entire city and just about 8 to 32 channels means maximum 32 simultaneous calls. So this limited the usage of mobile phones. If more number of mobile towers were installed then there use to be an interference of frequency of channels that adjacent tower was carrying. So in order to solve this problem the concept of frequency reuse was introduced and here comes the concept of cells of mobile towers as shown in picture. These cells have different frequencies for adjacent cells and same frequencies are reused in farther cells. The concept was like instead of using one high transmitting power mobile tower , use number of low power multiple towers that are ideally of the shape of hexagon and these hexagons are called cells. So from these concept of frequency reuse and splitting mobile towers to small cells comes the term CELL PHONE.

From the introduction of these cells of mobile towers, there are certain rules that adjacent cells always have different frequency hence the problem of frequency interference is solved also the same frequency is reused in towers located father then at least one cell. So is the concept of frequency reuse as shown in figure F1, F2 F3 are various frequencies and how they are planned to use in one cell is reused in farther cells. Also these group of cells is called cluster. As you are travelling from one place to another with your mobile device it keeps switching between various cells and you remain connected to mobile network through virtual cells of towers and lot of other processes like hand off takes place while switching form one cell to another.  So I hope that now that you can definitely  say why your mobile phone is called cell phone.
