You might have come across the term IOT, but many of you may not still be aware and clear of what does that actually mean. No worries for those of you who don't know what IOT buzz is all about keep reading. As such if I talk in depth then there is a lot of tech going beneath this IOT and its working.I will be concentrating on easy and lucid way of making you understand IOT tech. The word IOT is termed form Internet of things. As such its not very recent concept but in a way it is. Internet had deeply penetrated into our lives and IOT is you can say is an extension of Internet making in more deep rooted more integrated and making our lives more and more dependent on the power of internet. In IOT the background power or layer of transport is internet and so the term IOT. May be I might be sounding more technical but keep reading its that complicated.

To simplify the things I will start with one simple example, you would have definitely seen one advertise on Indian TV during last summer of Lloyd ACs featuring Shree Amitabh Bachchan. Where in this ad it was highlighted and marketed that the AC was having Wi-Fi capability and you can turn on and off the AC from any where. Hope you recalled that Ad. Now how does that happen that you can remotely do so ? here comes IOT.
Now what happens is that, an manufacturer places a hardware inside of your AC under consideration or any IOT enabled ac say for instance. That hardware has a built in Wi-Fi capability and also accompanied with a dedicated task micro controller, small amount of RAM where in a small program keeps running. Now that hardware is then connected to your home wifi router and through that router it is then hooked up to cloud servers through internet. An mobile application then makes up for an API to control that AC which is also connected to internet and having authentic access to cloud server where in information of your AC hardware connected to your wifi router through internet is stored and matched.
I hope that I have not complicated the Internet of things for you. Like wise many devices in a same home, having that small wifi chip , micro controller, some ram to store program with appropriate piece of software running on it can be hooked up to central server or cloud server and your mobile device is having front end of that server API to control the device.
So all in all this is just one application that I have told you about there are already lot of home appliances like Fridge, TVs, ACs, Washing Machines, Electric Kettles, and the list just goes on in just home appliances category. In background lot of many things like safety, Authentication, privacy,security etc is taken care of for all of those devices connected to cloud servers for IOT.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these things to connect and exchange data,creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, resulting in efficiency improvements, economic benefits, and reduced human exertions.
The number of IoT devices increased 31% year-over-year to 8.4 billion in the year 2017 and it is estimated that there will be 30 billion devices by 2020.The global market value of IoT is projected to reach $7.1 trillion by 2020.
Some of the identified application of IOT are as follows: Medical and Healthcare, Transportation, Building and Home Automation (and example in the article was of home automation), Manufacturing, Agriculture,Energy Management, Environment Monitoring etc.
